    What If Your Response
    Is a Curve?

    Design of Experiments (DOE) gives biologists huge power to understand complex systems, but the response that’s modeled often needs to be a single data point for each run.

    In many systems, the outcome you care about is a curve - like when you’re looking at growth, binding or kinetics. Choosing an individual point from these curves to model in your DOE analysis massively reduces the possible insight you can derive from an experiment.

    But it is possible to use a curve as your response, enabling much more powerful analyses of these systems.

    Learning Manager, Global Technical Enablement - JMP

    Phil Kay is a learning manager for JMP, a division of SAS. His job is to understand the science and engineering challenges and provide guidance on data analytic solutions for industrial organizations around the world.

    Previously, Phil was a key scientist in the development of numerous processes for the manufacture of colorants for digital printing at FujiFilm Imaging Colorants. Phil has a master’s degree in applied statistics with a dissertation on Design of Experiments. He also has a master’s and PhD in chemistry.

    He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, a Chartered Chemist, and a member of the committee for the Process Chemistry and Technology Group with the Royal Society of Chemistry.

    Markus Gershater

    Markus Gershater

    Chief Scientific Officer & Co-Founder - Synthace

    Markus co-founded Synthace after working as a Research Associate in Synthetic Biology at University College London where he developed novel biosynthesis methods using pathway engineering.

    Prior to UCL, he was a Biotransformation Scientist at Novacta Biosystems working as part of the industrial biotechnology group that conducted more than 90 contract research projects for over 20 clients. Markus has a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from Durham.
