The future of biological research and development must be built on a foundation of well-contextualized data. The integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, lab automation, and the internet of things is beginning to enable researchers to address ever-more-complex biological questions across a rapidly expanding bioeconomy. However, the ability to use these tools successfully requires a fundamental shift in how we generate biological data. According to the report, many initiatives are being formed to enable the sharing or structuring of biological data - with the end goal being the ability to leverage artificial intelligence. However, to complement these initiatives, it is important to focus on how this data is being generated in the lab. Critically, systems that allow for the smart definition and capture of richer datasets at the beginning of the data journey will be vital to unlocking AI's power in the experimental sciences.
